Mixing with the Royals

On Wednesday 14th May CEO Beth was invited to attend a royal garden party at Buckingham Palace in recognition of services to education - what a day!

She (and husband James) joined 7000 other people from the field of education and skills to enjoy an afternoon in the royal gardens, she's told us all about it in this week's blog:

The day started by passing through security to join other guests stood outside the iconic gates of the palace. Everyone waited in anticipation to see the gates open! When they did open (15 minutes early) there was much excitement as everyone got to walk through the gates that are usually closed to members of the public. How many times have I stood here looking through these gates?! Walking through them felt genuinely surreal!

We walked round the side of Buckingham palace to the sound of a brass band, onto the garden lawn where marquees were laid out ready to serve afternoon tea. We found ourselves a seat and enjoyed the brass band playing medleys from Wicked and the Lion King! A lovely atmosphere of something really special but also nice and relaxed.

Tea was served - an amazing selection of sandwiches and cakes, and a wonderful gluten free spread for Beth! Then the King arrived! He walked through the middle of the crowd speaking to different people and taking a genuine interest in the work people had done to support education. We didn't get to speak to him but it felt really exciting to be close to someone we know is so special, who we have grown up watching on our screens and who leads our country.

After we had eaten and seen the king, we wandered round the stunning gardens of Buckingham palace. It was wonderful to see the gardens that are usually hidden to the public, and imagine all the famous figures who have walked and played in these spaces!

We loved the people watching, and I was very excited when they brought round tubs of ice cream! It was a truly special day - not only to get to see behind the veil of Buckingham Palace, but to celebrate and reflect on the past 8 years. To be surrounded by other inspirational educators felt a real privilege, and helps to show the difference that we all can collectively make through our own small actions.
